you’re probs young, you’re white, most likely heterosexual and definitely one privileged, ignorant piece of work. but i’m happy that shits working out for you. The others must just be making “wrong decisions.” This has nothing todo with the economic system and how it screws most people over, it just means you’ve scraped by so far, like you’ve just described. continue saving.
+1: This kid clearly isn’t getting a liberal arts education.
1. Read some critical scholars and account for some of your privilege.
2. Learn about the logical fallacy of the false dichotomy. People protesting as part of the Occupy movement are not lazy, nor are they asking for a handout. Many in the movement are asking for accountability for companies that broke the law and/or otherwise did really ethically dubious things. When you say that “I expect nothing to be handed to me” you imply that everyone is lazy unlike you. Again, please read some critical scholars. In fact, PLEASE read John T. Warren’s Performing Purity: Whiteness, Pedagogy, and the Reconstitution of Power.
3. Let’s do a little math based on some assumptions. The current federal minimum wage is about $7.25/hr x 31hrs = 224.75/wk. Assuming you work 52/wks per year and never take a day off that’s 11,687 (when you include taxes, you would probably be living below the federal poverty line. A rough guestimate would be about 4%-5% for social security and other such taxes you pay. I’m excluding income tax since you get a handout called the hope or lifetime learning credit). So, realistically you’re looking at more or less 11,000. If you went to Florida State University (one of my alma maters and one of the universities with the cheapest tuition in this country) you would be paying $5,825 in tuition and most fees per year (Assuming you’re an instate student). Assuming you indeed have scholarships that pay 90% of your tuition that’d be: $102 per credit hour mulitply that by 30 credits for an average academic year and that’d be $3,060 for tuition and most fees. You have to include about $2000 more for health insurance that’s required (unless you’re getting it from mommy and daddy, in which case that’s a hand out, but you work for everything right?) So, $11,000-$5060 = $5940. Don’t forget books for your classes, that runs about $1500 per year (I’m being generous) So you’re down to $4400. Thank god you don’t live on campus, because you couldn’t afford it. For 9 months (the average school year) you’d have $440/mo to come up with rent, utilities, food, and any entertainment. The other three months you probably go back home to live with mommy and daddy, right? That’s a handout….and hey, isn’t that a brand new macbook pro I saw on your tumblr between all those pictures of scantily clad women and pictures of couples kissing?
I’m not saying it’s impossible that you could be completely self sufficient on a job “barely” over minimum wage working 30+ hours a week, but it seems pretty unlikely.
Blaming people for not having the same opportunities as you is exactly what the Occupy movement is about. I feel sorry for you and the education you’re receiving if you are so myopic and self-centered that you can’t see that.
Oh and by the way I graduated with a 3.91 GPA summa cum laude with departmental honors. I worked two jobs through out my undergrad, I saved and thankfully received some help from my parents for my BA. I currently have $45K in debt which has helped support me through my BA, MA and now into my PhD program. I am incredibly fortunate and privileged to be where I am and I am the 99%.
This is amazing. It’s funny, but it seems that I’ve inadvertently gotten some facebook friends of mine in this area having gnarly debates about OWS by posting about it recently. I really wish I could show them this specific post, because it more eloquently sums up the argument I have against those decrying the movement.
Reblogging for Jesse. This is why I don’t want to talk to you about OWS, hun.
What a dumbass. He’s a Hipster white boy that comes from wealth or from an upper crust middle class family. Stfu. And the top 1% should be tax more. The Middle class shouldn’t have to be tax so much. Fuck the rich, pay up mother fuckers! And I bet he has 4 dogs or some shit. And BTW asshole you are in the 99% because you’re not making a million a year. In other word you’re poor ass fuck. And no one takes home 300 dollars out of 30 hours of work if you’re making less than minimum wage. And that is because of taxes. Unless you work off the books?
